A doughnut or donut is a type of fried dough confectionery or dessert food. The doughnut is popular in many countries and prepared in various forms as a sweet snack that can be homemade. This basic doughnut recipe is simple and easy to follow.You can also get creative with the toppings, or stick to the classic chocolate glazing or cinnamon-sugar coating.
For making Dough –
All-purpose flour (Maida) – 300 gm
Sugar – 3 tbs
Salt – 1/2 Tsp
Warm Milk – 3/4 cup
Egg – 1
Butter – 3 tbs (80 gm)
Dry yeast – 2 tsp
water as needed
Vanilla – few drops (optional)
Other ingredients –
Flour for dusting
Oil to deep fry
For coating –
Caster sugar – 1/4 cup
Cinnamon powder – 1/2 tsp
For chocolate glazing –
Icing sugar – 1/2 cup
Cocoa powder – 3 Tsp
Milk – 3 tsp /as needed
Vanilla essence – 2 drops
Take warm milk, sugar, salt, yeast in a bowl and let it activate for 5 mins till it gets foamy. Beat an egg nicely and keep ready. After few minutes add egg and vanilla, mix well with a fork until the sugar gets dissolves completely with the milk .
Sieve the flour. Add butter mix properly with the flour, mix with the yeast mixture, Knead until a soft dough, knead it for 10 min on a platform/slab. Cover and let it rise for an hour or till it is doubled in size.
Punch the air down and add more flour and knead to a soft dough again for 5 to 6 min.
Now roll it to a thick circle (Approx about 5 cms or 1/4 inch thick) and Use a doughnut cutter (or 2 concentric cutters) to cut out the doughnuts. Remove the holes,
Sprinkle little flour on a plate, Arrange it on a plate, keep covered, let it rise for 1 hour or so.
Meanwhile, prepare to coat – Add sugar powder and cinnamon powder, toss it/sieve it together on a plate and set aside.
To make chocolate glazing –
Sieve icing sugar, cocoa powder in a bowl, add milk mix it as there are no lumps add vanilla, mix properly, (the consistency must not be thick or too thin) mix it and keep ready.
Heat oil in a pan on a medium flame, when it is hot drop few in and fry
Not to disturb for 2 to 3 min, then flip over and fry until golden.
Drain on to the paper towel and set aside.
When it is warm enough coat it with the desired coating.
Coat it with icing sugar and cinnamon mixture. Arrange it on a plate and set aside.
When the Doughnuts are warm enough, take a donut Dip it in the glaze, top with some sprinkles ( like Chopped almonds, sprinkles, silver balls, dried coconut..combination of toppings.)
