French beans curry recipe I Beans palya recipe


Hurlikayi palya or French beans/green beans side dish is a traditional Bangalorean dish, which used to prepare by my mother-in-law in their in-law’s house, this curry is a common side dish in all  family occasions.The great thing about cooking with fresh green beans is that they are incredibly versatile vegetables. Whether you saute, boil, or stir fry these green bean recipes are healthy and delicious.

Preparation time – 15 min

Cooking time – 15 min

Serves – 4

Ingredients –


Fresh tender green beans – 500 gm

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Onion – 2 no’s chopped

Curry leaves – 2 springs

Chana dal – 2 tsp

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Peanuts – 3 tbs

Poppy seeds – 1 tsp

Chilly powder – 1 tsp

Coconut – 1/2 cup grated

Coriander leaves – 1 bunch for garnishing

Salt to taste

Oil to fry

How to prepare / to make Green beans curry – 


Wash green beans in water and drain the water in it ,cut it into 1 1/2 inch and make a vertical slit/cut in between and cut as shown in the above image and keep ready.


Heat a kadai dry roast peanuts to crisp and set aside, remove the skin of it when it is cool.


In the same kadai add poppy seeds and dry roast to light brown in colour and set aside.


Crush dry roasted poppy seeds to a coarse powder and set aside.


Crush roasted and peeled peanuts to a coarse powder and set aside.


Heat a pan by adding oil in it,when it is hot add mustard seeds when it splutter’s add chana dal and urad dal saute till golden in colour


Add chopped onions and saute until it turns to translucent.


Add green beans into it and mix altogether fry for 3 min


Add chilly powder and salt to taste once again mix properly.


Fry/saute for 2 min then add water to cook (about 1/2 cup of water) close the lid of the pan.Cook in a medium flame.


Ensure that beans are cooked once it is done (water in the curry must absorb)add grated coconut and saute for a minute


Add prepared roasted and crushed peanut powder and poppy seed powder together and mix altogether.Remove from the flame.garnish with fresh chopped coriander leaves.



Enjoy! as a side dish.Traditional Hulikayi palya,Green beans curry is ready.It is aromatic, nutty flavored tasty curry.

Tips – please take care while frying (dry roast) peanuts and poppy seeds ,don’t over roast or under cook which is the key ingredients to the dish. 

You can also use red chilies other than using chilly powder, you can dry fry red chilies and make a coarse powder along with peanuts and poppy seeds,which is the traditional procedure to prepare this recipe.
