Masala akki rotti recipe I Rice roti

Akki rotti is a popular dish of Karnataka, there are different varieties of akki rotti’s, Vegetable masala akki rotti is a healthy and delicious akki rotti prepared with grated cabbage, carrot, onion,  Some dishes never fail to bore you .. though you are eating from ages, it is always considered as favorite, Its so addictive, delicious and healthy, Hot hot akki rotti straight from pan with ghee/butter and chutney is just heavenly.


Rice flour – 2 cup

Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

Cumin – 1 tsp

Chana dal – 1 tbs

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Curry leaves

Dry chilies – 3 no’s broken into small pieces

Onion – 2 medium chopped finely

Cabbage – 1 cup grated or finely chopped

Carrot – 1/2 cup grated

Dill leaves chopped – 1 bunch (optional)

Coconut – 1/4 cup grated

Coriander – 1 bunch chopped



Hot water to make the dough





Heat a pan by adding oil in it, when it is hot add mustard seeds, allow it to sizzle in oil, add cumin, chana dal and urad dal, fry until it turns to light brown in color.


Add chopped curry leaves, coriander, chopped onion, fry until raw smell of onion evaporates from it.


Add grated vegetables, add grated coconut into


Saute  for a while, remove from the flame.


Add rice flour, salt


Add hot water,  mix it nicely to form a dough.


Add little by little water and make a smooth dough


The dough should be easy to spread. It should not be too hard,


Grease a flat pan with enough oil, divide the the dough to a medium size ball, place a orange sized ball on the center of the greased  tawa, go on spreading it by tapping it with your greased fingers.


Grease your finger until you spread it to a thin round rotti.


Switch on the flame and cook until it is done, add oil


Pour some oil, all over the rotti. Cover and cook till it becomes slightly brown in colour.


Then flip the rotti and continue cooking for about a minute or so till the rotti becomes crispy. Remove it from the flame, remove the rotti, To reduce the temperature of tawa faster, keep  the backside of the pan under running water for 1-2 mins. After about 2-3 mins, tawa is ready and you can prepare next rotti. Continue the same procedure for rest of the dough.


Akki rotti is ready to be served.


Apply ghee or butter on hot akki rotti’s, Serve hot Enjoy with coconut chutney.

Note –

You can also prepare with finely chopped capsicums / grated cucumber /cooked tender hyacinth beans / corn / handful of crushed roasted groundnuts /dill leaves/methi leaves so…on.. Addition of any veggie make healthy and nutritious breakfast.

Another method to make – Grease a plastic sheet / aluminum foil / butter paper sheet/banana leaf .Take an orange sized dough and spread it evenly with your greased fingers to a medium thin pancake. Remove it carefully / shift it on your hand ✋ quickly put/place it on the hot tawa.
