Squid Masala Fry I Calamari Masala Fry

Preparation Time : 30 min Marination Time : 3 to 6 hrs Cooking Time : 10 min Serves : 4

Squid / Calamari Masala Fry is a very special dish made with Squid, onion, tomato and mild spices, an easy recipe with simple ingredients to Serve it as a side dish for roti or rice.  


To Marinade –

Sqiud /calamari – 300 gm

Turmeric – 2 pinch

Salt to taste

Lemon juice/vinegar – 1/2 Tsp

Other ingredients –

Fennel seeds – 1/4 tsp crushed coarsly

Ginger, garlic – 1 tsp each chopped/paste

Curry leaves – 2 spring

Green chilies – 1 slit

Onion – 2 medium chopped

Tomato – 1 medium chopped

Chili powder – 1 tsp adjust to your taste

Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp

Garamamasala powder – 2 pinch

Pepper powder – 1/4 tsp

Turmeric –  1 pinch

Salt to taste

Coriander for garnishing

Oil to fry





Clean and rinse squid. cut it into small pieces/rings. Add it in a bowl, add turmeric, salt, and lemon juice marinate it for at least 30 minor for few hrs in the refrigerator, the more you marinate it takes less time to cook,

Remove the marinated squid from the refrigerator before 30 mins.

Heat a heavy bottomed pan with oil in it, when it is hot fry chopped crushed fennel, ginger, and garlic, fry until aromatic, then add chopped onion and curry leaves, fry until translucent, then add tomatoes fry until it becomes soft


Add marinated squid, stir-fry for 2 secs,


Add chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala and a little salt stir fry for few secs.


Add 1/2 cup of water, bring it to boil, cook covered on a medium flame.To avoid the squid from becoming rubbery and chewy, do not overcook so be careful while cooking, as it is marinated it get cooked when boiled within 5- 6 mins


When the water gets absorbed and ensures the squid is done switch off the flame. Add pepper powder and coriander, toss it well.


Enjoy as a side dish for rice/roti’s/Neer Dosa.
