Uddina vade or how to prepare urad dal vada.

Uddina vade is a famous traditional south Indian dish made with uddina bele/urad dal so  the name uddina vade,It is served with a combination of idli,vada and sambar.This crispy vada is made with urad dal batter mixed with jeera,whole pepper ,which is crispy on outside and soft on inside.

Soaking time – 4 hours

Preparation time – 15 min


Urad dal – 1 1/2 cup

Raw rice – 2 tbs

Green chilly – 4 no’s

Jeera – 1tsp

Whole pepper – 1tbs

Chopped coconut 2 tbs

Coriander leaves – 1 bunch chopped

Salt to taste

Cooking soda – 1/4 tsp


Soak urad dal and rice for 4 hours. Drain out the water .


Take a mixer jar add soaked urad dal and rice, green chilies. Grind to a thick paste by adding little water to a fluffy batter [so that the batter should float if one drop of batter is put in water.]


After preparing a batter add jeera, whole pepper, chopped coconut, chopped coriander leaves, cooking soda mix altogether and keep aside.  Put oil in a kadai heat it, when oil becomes hot, wet your palm take a little batter flatten and make a hole in the center like a doughnut and drop in the oil slowly one by one. Follow the same procedure for all batter. Fry to golden brown and crisp on both sides.


Serve hot with chutney / sambar
