Kodo Millet Khichdi recipe

Kodo Millet khichdi is a nutritious dish, prepared with kodo millet, dal, and vegetables. Kodo millet, the wild cereal, has many medicinal properties with vitamins and minerals, health benefits of millet include its ability to protect your heart health, protect yourself from diabetes, improve your digestive system and many more. Khichdi is a supercilious food and a great meal for any time of the day.


Kodo millet – 1 cup

Tur dal – 1/2 cup

Onion – 1/2 cup chopped

Carrot – 1/2 cup  chopped

French beans – 1/2 cup chopped

Potato – 1/2 cup chopped

Brinjal – 1/2 cup

Salt to taste

Oil to fry

To grind –

Coriander – small bunch

Green chilies – 3 no’s (adjust to your taste)

Ginger – 1/2 inch chopped roughly

Garlic – 8 cloves (adjust to your taste)

For tempering –

Cumin – 1 tsp

Curry leaves – 2 springs

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp





Add Kodo millet in a pan, dry fry it until it get hot. Remove from the flame and set aside.


Add all the ingredients to grind in a mixer jar, blend it to a coarse paste with out adding water and keep ready.


Keep all the ingredients handy to start, heat a pressure pan by adding oil in it, when it is hot add cumin seeds, allow it to sizzle in oil, then add curry leaves and chopped onion, fry until onion turns to light brown in color.


Add grounded paste into it, saute until raw smell evaporates from it.


Add veggies, saute in oil for 2 mins, add turmeric powder


Add millet and dal, saute in oil for a minute.


Add 3 1/2 cup of water and salt to taste. Bring the mixture to boil.


When it begins to boil, check the taste add salt if necessary, stir, close the lid of the pressure pan , cook it for 3 to 4 whistles. Turn off the flame.


When the pressure of the pan settle down by its own, remove the lid, mix cooked khichdi properly with a spatula,


Serve hot with ghee on it.


Aromatic, nutritious Kodo millet khichdi is ready to enjoy.

Note –

You can add any of your favorite veggis  in preparation.

You can add equal quantity of dal to prepare khichdi, you can add tur dal or moong dal in preparation.

Add garlic and ginger to adjust to your taste, adding more quantity of coriander leaves makes tasty and colorful khichdi.

    Dear Madame, thank you for the detailed receipe. I have this doubt and confusion about millets. they all look alike. In this case, you have indicated clearly as to how it has to be used. but how to use it in other preparations ? they all look alike. is it better to fry them first ? can we fry and grind them into a powder before mixing with other ingredients. I shall be glad to have your guidance in this regard. yours truly, Sarveswaran

      Though Millets look alike they are different, for some recepies we have to dry fry before adding.. Like upma,Pongal,bhath etc, to prepare ganji/kanji,dosa idli no need to fry them. Thanks for the feedback and support

  5. Grind soaked kodo millet and poha as well. Mix with urad dal batter. Ensure that the consistency of batter is that of regular idli batter. Steam or pressure cooker for about 10 to 12 minutes. If using a pressure cooker, steam without putting the whistle on the lid.
